Description

Soul of the Samurai is the fifth blade in The 8 Samurai Collection, and in many ways its spiritual core. Forged by Mukansa Master Kozaemon Yukihira, son of a past Living National Treasure, this sword stands among the finest expressions of contemporary Japanese swordmaking. During a recent journey to Japan, Taum enjoyed the rare honor of visiting the master at his home and forge, witnessing firsthand the discipline, philosophy, and living tradition behind this blade. The horimono is carved into the steel with subtle reliefed depth, rather than flat incision. On one side, relief carvings that are cut directly into the surface of the blade - a cherry blossom branch emerges—symbol of beauty, impermanence, and resolve. On the reverse Moji-bori carvings of script ,such as quotes from clasical literature and poetry, lines from an ancient samurai poem declare the essence of the warrior: honor and courage in the face of death. That master of this horimono technique is the late Yanagimura Senju, widely regarded as the greatest Mukansa Master in his field, in the last century. His work elevates the blade beyond ornamentation, transforming it into sculptural art—steel shaped not only by hammer and fire, but by restraint, philosophy, and lineage. The saya is hand-lacquered with maki-e - a traditional Japanese artform, using gold on urushi - cherry blossoms, dusted in sifted gold that subtly echoes the blade’s motif, creating a quiet dialogue between steel and lacquer. Take special notice how the artist has added iridescent scarlet undertones that take the work from beautiful to exquisite!Museum-quality dragon fittings complete the koshirae, balancing power with elegance and authority. It is the essence of the warrior spirit, forged into steel, lacquer, and gold. An heirloom for generations. This is the only wakizashi in the 8 samurai series, being unique in the collection, which originally was envisioned as being exclusively katanas.

The Story

During a journey to Japan three years ago, Taum was presented with a rare opportunity: the acquisition of a wakizashi from the family of the late horimono master Yanagimura Senju. At the time, Taum knew only that the blade bore the unmistakable hand of one of history’s greatest masters of high‑relief horimono. What he did not yet know was the deeper story carried within the steel.
Only later was it revealed that the blade had been forged in 2002 by Mukansa Master Kozaemon Yukihira, expressly for his closest friend—Yanagimura Senju himself. The sword was never intended for public sale. It was a personal work, born of friendship, mutual respect, and shared mastery between two legends of Japanese sword art.
Unlike the other swords in the 8 Samurai Series, which are custom‑commissioned, this wakizashi could not be recreated. Its union of Yukihira’s forging and Senju’s rare high‑relief horimono represents a convergence that may never occur again. The cherry blossom emerging from the steel speaks not only of impermanence and resolve, but of legacy—of masters who understood that true art outlives the artist.
As the only wakizashi in the 8 Samurai Collection, Soul of the Samurai occupies a singular place: intimate, spiritual, and deeply personal. It is not merely a weapon, nor even an artwork, but a testament to lineage, friendship, and the quiet truths carried by the warrior’s path.
